Summer PD with the Folger Shakespeare Library

So for the last two weeks, I’ve been immersed an online class with the Folger Shakespeare Library. One of my professional development goals was trying to better myself and knowledge of my content. Usually, the Folger does in-person summer institutes. I didn’t realize we were one of the first of their online opportunities, but I’m so grateful for the opportunity to take a meaningful class for free and weave it in when it was convenient.

Blogging: Best practices for teachers and students

In order to be successful using blogs in your classrooms, you have to do more than just come up with creative lessons and projects for the students to do with the blog. The more integral they become to your everyday teaching, the more you will need to establish guidelines for your students. You may have to ask your school or your district to tweak their Acceptable Use Policy or Digital Citizenship Policy to include blogging, or maybe you’ll need to create student contracts or notify parents.

As someone who has been teaching writing since I started teaching, blogs excite me. I love that writing becomes something for outside the classroom. It’s no longer just for the “teacher’s eyes”. Blogging brings a connectedness to the classroom, exposing other classmates and sometimes even the entire world wide web to a student’s thoughts and insights, making it a great tool for 21st century classrooms and learning.
